How to Tell When the Board is Bad

Today we tackle the ever-present question: is it the board that’s bad or another component? It can be tricky to tell a lot of times.

But before we slap in an expensive new board, there are some tests we can do to shed light on what part is actually causing the problem.

In this video, we look at a GE dishwasher that’s not heating. Our LOI (Load of Interest) is of course the heater. But is it the heater that’s bad or the main board? Or another component in the circuit with these items? Watch the video to get the lowdown.

Voltage measurements tell you if a load is receiving the correct supply voltage and an amp measurement tells if the load is working in spec. Knowing the specs of the components you’re measuring is just as important as the tests themselves.

But when dealing with computer-controlled appliances where a load’s power supply is controlled by the computer, you also have to think about algorithms.

In this case, the computer was not supplying voltage to the load (heating element). But this did NOT mean the computer was borked. Instead, the computer was looking for an input from another component (thermistor/flood switch combo) to algorithmically decide whether or not to supply voltage to the heating element.
